Monopolies Face Opposition
The issue of state monopolies has caused tension between the foreign Internet gambling companies and the state sanctioned monopolies. This in turn, leads to the worsening of the EU online casino gambling situation. It is maintained by many of the online casinos, as well as the European Commission that the EU principles and policies support and open an accessible internet gambling market between all EU member-states already allowing types of gambling. However, several prominent EU countries continue to sustain their negative attitude towards the issue. They have been successfully running land and online gambling market and it is obvious they don’t want to lose the profit from state-run monopolies.
As far as the online casinos and betting companies are concerned, they too are willing to put their foot down. A Swedish internet gambling company- Betsson has been facing many obstacles since it opened a land betting shop in Stockholm earlier this year. The company decided to open the shop although it is officially forbidden for any company, foreign or domestic, to compete with the state’s online casino gambling monopoly. No surprise that Betsson’s land betting shop was challenged in the courts. In spite of the fact that Betsson didn’t win the case, the company is not going to give up. It has placed two appeals to the higher courts to reconsider the previous ruling, yet both of those appeals were rejected. Nevertheless, an open land and online casino gambling market is simply too precious to withdraw from the fight. And Bettson definitely knows that, if we consider the information the company released saying it is now taking the appeal process even higher in the court system- to the Administrative Court of Appeal. Looks like Betsson is going to take all possible steps to win.
